India has announced an ambitious goal to achieve parity with global semiconductor manufacturing leaders by 2031-2032. Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared at the Bloomberg New Economic Forum that India will "catch up with where many countries are today" in semiconductor capabilities within this timeframe.

The country is committing $10 billion in special funds to develop its semiconductor industry, offering 50% subsidies for project costs and streamlined land access in special economic zones to attract investment.

Major industry players are already establishing operations:

  • Micron Technology is building a packaging and testing facility in Gujarat

  • Tata Group is developing multiple assembly and testing plants, including a key facility in Assam

  • Tower Semiconductor and Clas-SiC are planning partnerships with local companies

Three Indian chip factories are scheduled to begin commercial production in early 2026, supported by the country's growing chip design ecosystem and engineering talent pool. The government aims to replicate its success in attracting Apple's iPhone manufacturing to develop a comprehensive local semiconductor supply chain.

However, significant challenges remain:

  • Current production focuses on 28nm mature nodes, lagging behind advanced nanometer processes

  • Shortages of high-end technical talent and incomplete infrastructure

  • Insufficient specialty chemical supplies

  • Intense global competition as multiple countries expand semiconductor production

ICgoodFind :India's semiconductor ambitions face both opportunity and substantial hurdles, with production scale-up and ecosystem development determining its global impact.
