Aug 6 (local time) - U.S. President Trump’s announcement of 100% tariffs on all imported semiconductors sent shocks through the global industry. However, South Korea’s Trade Minister Yoo Han-koo stated: "Korea will not be hit by the 100% tariff."
Yoo explained in a program: "We concluded negotiations with an agreement to receive most-favored-nation (MFN) treatment for future tariffs, especially in semiconductors and bio sectors. In other words, if the U.S. sets MFN tariff for chips at 15%, we’ll also pay 15%—regardless of whether the U.S. imposes 100% or 200%."
Recent U.S.-Korea tariff talks suggest Korea will likely face only 15% tariffs. The U.S. accepted Korea’s demand for treatment no worse than other nations in semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, and with the U.S. already agreeing 15% tariffs with the EU, Korea is expected to follow suit.
Asked if Samsung and SK Hynix would avoid the 100% tariff, Yoo confirmed: "Yes."
