Samsung Electronics saw its shares surge more than 5%, reaching their highest point since August 2024, following reports that the company received approval from Nvidia for its advanced memory chips. This marks a major breakthrough for the Korean tech giant in the semiconductor sector.

The key driver behind this surge was news that Samsung’s 12-layer HBM3E product passed Nvidia’s qualification tests. This achievement is highly significant, as the product will be used in AI accelerators essential for training models like ChatGPT and DeepSeek. It not only opens new growth avenues in the high-end memory market but also strengthens Samsung's position against competitors like SK Hynix.

Since early 2025, Samsung has significantly increased its focus on high-bandwidth memory, which is critical for AI operations and designed to work with Nvidia chips used by companies like Meta and OpenAI. With AI technology advancing rapidly, demand for such chips continues to soar.

Notably, Samsung’s stock has risen approximately 20% this month. In addition to the HBM3E approval, market expectations of a supply shortage in general memory chips—driven by AI demand—have further fueled investor optimism. Global funds purchased over $2 billion in Samsung shares in September alone, reflecting strong market confidence.

Although rumors about Samsung’s HBM3E passing Nvidia tests had circulated throughout the year, this official confirmation—after 19 months of development and multiple delays—has provided the market with much-needed reassurance. Citi analysts had anticipated an official announcement by late September or early October, and the confirmation has further boosted market sentiment.

In other segments of the chip market, Samsung has also achieved notable success. In July, the company secured a $16.5 billion chip manufacturing agreement with Tesla, reinforcing its foundry business and demonstrating its broad capabilities in semiconductor manufacturing.
