Renesas Electronics launched its new flagship 32-bit microcontrollers RX74M and RX74N. Both run at up to 600MHz and are the first in the RX family to use 22nm process with embedded MRAM. Versus the previous 240MHz RX72M and RX72N, performance more than doubles. The RX74M targets industrial automation and factory automation equipment including AC drives, industrial robots, and PLCs; the RX74N targets smart meters, power conditioners, and HVAC systems.

The RX74M and RX74N use 22nm process, integrating a 600MHz RXv3e core, 1MB MRAM, 256KB zero-wait-state TCM, and 1.5MB SRAM, enabling fast, low-jitter real-time processing even under frequent interrupts and branches. Unlike traditional embedded flash, MRAM needs no erase before writing, speeding code and data updates, shortening programming time, and reducing system downtime—improving responsiveness in applications that frequently save parameters, logs, or update data.
On industrial networking, the RX74M integrates an EtherCAT slave controller, TSN-capable gigabit Ethernet switch, and CAN FD on one chip, supporting mainstream industrial networks like EtherCAT, PROFINET, and EtherNet/IP, including deterministic communication via TSN and redundant configurations like EtherNet/IP DLR. It provides an industrial networking foundation for IIoT, connecting field devices to upper systems.
On security, the RX74M and RX74N integrate ProtectZone in the RX CPU to isolate secure and non-secure regions on a single chip. The new-gen Renesas security IP extends TSIP with public-key cryptography, supporting authenticated encryption and broader hash algorithms, enabling post-quantum cryptography-inclusive security on a single MCU—responding to regulations like the Cyber Resilience Act requiring full-lifecycle device security.
The lineup also offers 300MHz versions with over 20% lower power, packages including 176/224/320-pin LFBGA and 100/144/176-pin LFQFP, supply voltage 1.62V–3.6V, and operating temperature -40°C to +125°C. For software and tools, Renesas partners with Codewerk, RT-Labs, IAR, eForce, and Zephyr RTOS, and offers a scalable development environment via FSP shared across the RX, RA, and RZ families.
ICgoodFind Summary: The RX74M and RX74N pack 22nm process, MRAM, 600MHz, and triple industrial Ethernet into a single MCU, targeting industrial equipment's simultaneous demands for real-time performance, network protocol compatibility, and security compliance. MRAM's erase-free writes improve responsiveness more directly than process upgrades in industrial scenarios with frequent parameter and log updates.
