AMD has strengthened its AI portfolio with the acquisition of U.S. inference startup MK1, accelerating its push into high-speed AI inference and enterprise-grade software solutions.
MK1 was founded by Paul Merolla, co-founder of Neuralink, and employs talent from leading tech firms including Meta, Tesla, and Apple. The company’s Flywheel technology—already optimized for AMD hardware—processes over 1 trillion tokens per day. When paired with AMD Instinct GPU memory architecture, it delivers accurate, cost-effective, and traceable inference performance. Merolla emphasized that AMD’s resources will help scale the technology to broader deployments.

The deal marks another strategic move in AMD’s expanding AI ecosystem. Recent acquisitions include:
-
ZT Systems for $4.9 billion in August 2024
-
Key teams from Enosemi, Untether AI, and Brium
These additions complement AMD’s growing AI software and hardware offerings.
Financially, AMD continues to deliver strong results:
-
Q3 revenue reached $9.25 billion, up 36% year-on-year
-
Net income grew 61% to $1.2 billion
-
Q4 revenue is projected at $9.6 billion, exceeding expectations
The company also announced a 6-gigawatt compute partnership with OpenAI, with the first 1GW of Instinct MI450 GPUs scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2026. CEO Lisa Su indicated that AI-related revenue could reach tens of billions of dollars by 2027.
AMD’s stock has doubled this year, with its market cap now at $397.2 billion.
