Aug 6 (local time) - U.S. President Trump announced a plan to impose approximately 100% tariffs on imported chips and semiconductor products. Notably, he emphasized that no tariffs will apply if the products are made in the U.S.
Trump revealed the plan during a White House Oval Office press conference with Apple CEO Tim Cook. Cook announced Apple will add $100 billion in U.S.-based research and manufacturing over the next four years, on top of its previous $500 billion commitment. Trump stated: "We’ll levy high tariffs on chips and semiconductors, but companies like Apple that commit to U.S. factories or already produce here will be exempt."
Beyond Apple, top chipmakers including TSMC, NVIDIA, and GlobalFoundries have pledged to produce some products in the U.S. The tariff’s effective date and details on how much production qualifies for exemption remain unannounced.
