Andes Shuts US RISC‑V Subsidiary Condor – Cuzco High‑Performance CPU Project Stalls

Andes Technology, a Taiwan‑based RISC‑V CPU IP vendor, has closed its Austin‑based US subsidiary Condor Computing – less than three years after its March 2023 founding. The shutdown follows delays in the Cuzco project, a 64‑bit RISC‑V CPU core targeting data center and HPC applications.

Condor was set up to develop high‑performance processor IP for AI, automotive, and enterprise compute, but product development encountered repeated technical hurdles, according to Jon Peddie Research. The subsidiary’s entire IP portfolio has been transferred back to Andes headquarters. Most staff had already been let go, with a small number returning to the parent company. Condor CEO Ty Garibay has left to join Ambiq as VP of SoC design.

Andes, founded in 2005, was among the earliest to ship 32‑ and 64‑bit RISC‑V CPU IP. The Condor closure marks the end of its standalone US high‑performance R&D push, though the company has not issued an official statement on headcount reductions or Cuzco’s future roadmap.

ICgoodFind Takeaway:
High‑performance RISC‑V IP development remains a steep climb. Condor’s closure shows overseas expansion isn’t guaranteed – the industry will watch where Cuzco lands next.
