In automotive electronic systems, the high-reliability driving of resistive, capacitive, and inductive loads is critical to vehicle safety, especially under challenges such as inrush currents during high-power device startup. Targeting these needs, SG Microelectronics has introduced the SGM42210Q, a single-channel high-side driver designed for 12V automotive applications with integrated analog current sensing. It delivers strong load adaptability and comprehensive protection, making it an ideal solution for in-vehicle driving scenarios (the SGM42210NQ, part of the same series, will soon be available).

Certified to AEC-Q100 Grade 1, the SGM42210Q operates reliably across a wide temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. Key electrical specifications include: operating voltage from 5V to 28V, typical on-resistance of only 6mΩ (VCC=13V, IOUT=5A), shutdown quiescent current as low as 0.3µA, typical load current up to 15A, and typical output clamp voltage of 48.5V, balancing low power consumption with strong driving capability.
The device integrates current-sensing functionality through a dedicated pin for real-time load monitoring. In case of anomalies such as overcurrent, overtemperature, or short-to-supply/ground faults, it immediately outputs a fault signal, providing accurate system status feedback. For complex automotive operating conditions, it also incorporates comprehensive protection mechanisms: configurable fast short-circuit protection (with adjustable current limit), dual overtemperature shutdown for both the power stage and control circuit, open-load detection in shutdown mode, negative voltage clamping for inductive loads, undervoltage lockout, ground loss and battery disconnect protection, and wire-bond AOI inspection. It supports 3V/5V logic input compatibility for flexible interfacing with various MCUs, meeting the high integration and reliability demands of modern automotive electronics. Package options include eco-friendly SSOP-16 (exposed pad) and SSOP-14 (exposed pad).
Test data validates its robust performance:
-
Resistive load: At room temperature (25°C), it can continuously output 16A, while at high temperature (125°C), it stably provides 10A, with the chip surface temperature stabilizing around 110°C, demonstrating excellent thermal performance.
-
Capacitive load startup: Using the CL pin, it can be configured with a maximum current limit of 88A, smoothly driving two 12V/100W halogen lamps or a 20mF large electrolytic capacitor with a startup time of less than 30ms, easily handling high inrush currents.
-
Inductive load shutdown: The integrated overvoltage clamp circuit effectively dissipates demagnetization energy, preventing internal power transistor overvoltage breakdown and saving external clamp circuits and PCB space.
For short-circuit protection, the SGM42210Q offers fast and reliable response with dynamic thermal protection that reduces the current limit during sustained shorts to suppress temperature rise and extend device life. It supports three configurable current limits (66A, 78A, 88A), preventing excessive short-circuit currents that could cause battery voltage drop and protecting wiring harnesses and surrounding components. It has passed rigorous testing per AEC-Q100-012 for conditions such as low-voltage short-circuit and continuous short-circuit, achieving Grade A performance with over 1 million short-circuit cycles.
Reliability and EMC performance have been fully validated through AEC-Q100 Grade 1 full reliability testing, ISO 7637-2/ISO 16750-2 power transient immunity tests, IEC series radiated/conducted emission and transient immunity tests, and GB/T 19951-2019 system-level ESD tests, making it suitable for harsh automotive environments.
Thanks to its single-channel architecture and 15A continuous drive capability, the SGM42210Q is widely applicable to various automotive load driving scenarios such as seat heating, mirror heating, high-power halogen lamps, relays, and solenoid valves. SG Microelectronics also offers a complete portfolio of high-side and low-side drivers to cover diverse automotive electronic load driving needs.
