OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Neptune, a company specializing in AI model training tracking and debugging tools. The deal, valued at nearly $400 million and paid in stock, is aimed at strengthening OpenAI's core model development capabilities.

This acquisition is a strategic move based on long-term collaboration, as OpenAI has been a key Neptune customer, using its tools to monitor and debug the training of its GPT series large language models. Neptune's commercial value is well-established, with a client roster that also includes major global firms like Samsung, Roche, and HP.

Originally developed as an internal tool at Deepsense, Neptune became an independent company in 2018 and has since secured over $18 million in funding. For OpenAI, the acquisition brings mature training-support technology in-house, quickly filling a critical gap in its full-cycle model R&D pipeline.

The move comes amid OpenAI's surging valuation and business expansion. The company's valuation reached $500 billion in October, and there has been market speculation about a potential IPO that could value it at up to $1 trillion. While the CFO has stated an IPO is not an immediate priority, the acquisition underscores OpenAI's focus on consolidating its technical foundation while expanding into new verticals, such as its recent investment in Thrive Holdings to integrate AI into fields like accounting and IT services.
