On September 1st, GlobalFoundries (GF)—the world’s 5th-largest wafer foundry—announced Victor Hu, a semiconductor industry veteran, as Vice President of Sales and President of China, tasked with China market strategy, business expansion, and partnership building.

With over 25 years of semiconductor leadership experience, Hu has an impressive track record: he held roles at Qorvo, HTC, and Broadcom. As Qorvo’s VP of Sales for Greater China and Asia-Pacific, he led key market expansion projects and boosted regional market share. His dual engineering and business background makes him ideal to drive GF’s China operations.

GF’s China strategy centers on meeting rising demand for locally made chips from domestic OEMs, Fabless firms, and multinationals. It’s deepening local presence via new offices in Beijing and Guangzhou, collaboration with Guangzhou-based Zengxin Technology for local production, and expanded design services with customized support. GF President & COO Niels Anderskouv stressed: “China is key to the global supply chain and our secure chip production. Hu’s joining will enhance local manufacturing and customer ties.”

Hu noted: “China’s semiconductor industry is growing fast. I’ll work closely with partners, customers, and the local team to accelerate GF’s China growth.” Notably, GF already focuses on China’s automotive, IoT, and communication infrastructure sectors (with fully automotive-qualified products), and this personnel shift will strengthen that strategy.

ICgoodFind holds that GF’s appointment of Hu to lead China operations underscores its focus on the local market and fuels efforts to meet customers’ local production needs. Its future local cooperation and expansion will shape China’s wafer foundry market competition.
